It happened slowly, as most things that last tend to do. The War of Religions took Harvo's youth and gave something back in its place — a steady, load-bearing spine. He returned from the war alive and never explained why. Not because the memories were painful, but because no one would have understood the real answer: he simply survived. The Krom Guard knows when Sergeant Malfors Medians has been drinking late. They know it because Harvo is already standing at the edge of the yard before the morning bell, spear across his shoulders and face as still as a city wall, and training begins on time. Sergeant Malfors Medians arrives later. Harvo says nothing. He doesn't need to. He is not a hard man because he wants to inspire fear. He is hard because softness has never helped him in life. The younger guards call him old man behind his back — not mockingly, but the way one addresses a father. Vaccaratha-faith is routine for Harvo. Not a blazing truth, not something he brings up in daily conversation — just true, the way it is true that winter comes and a spear needs sharpening. He does not judge those whose faith burns hotter. He does not judge those whose faith runs cooler either. In the evening, when the unit sleeps, Harvo walks home to Krom. His wife is already quiet in the house, two children living their own lives on the other side of the city. He sits down at the table and eats what has been left under the cover. In the morning, he is at the yard before the others.
