As a result, all judicial power — both secular and divine — is centralized within the order of the Guardians of Fate. Sergeant Malfors Medians is the first soldier of his lineage. He comes from a rural working family—his father was a field laborer, and his mother spent Malfors’s entire childhood caring for his seven younger sisters. The Medians family lives on the outskirts of Krom, in a large, decaying house. Despite his working-class background, Malfors is ruthless. Although Malfors is only 33 years old, his soul already carries many burdens—most of them of his own making. He has had executed everyone in the village whom he has deemed heretical. At times, these people visit him in his dreams. Lately, he has not been able to sleep without the aid of alcohol. Malfors carries with him a wooden scepter of Vaccaratha, which he uses as a weapon against heretics.
