It was night, and he marched straight to the door of Sergeant Malfors Medians. He knocked with force and concealed anger, stood with perfect posture, and informed Malfors that he wished to join the Krom guards. Malfors tried to question the man about his past, but Ullo refused to answer. Still, his military bearing and stoic demeanor impressed Malfors, who invited him inside to shelter from the rain. Even the next day, Ullo would not speak of his background. To most questions, he gave only brief replies—a word here, a word there. Over breakfast, Malfors decided to test him and suddenly attacked him with his fists. Ullo won the fight. As Malfors lay on the floor with blood running from his nose, he decided to accept Ullo into his ranks. To this day, Ullo has refused to reveal anything about his past. Malfors does not even know whether Ullo believes in Vaccaratha. Still, Ullo is a disciplined soldier: he obeys orders and carries out his duties without complaint, leaving Malfors with little reason to question him. Even before arriving in Krom, Ullo walked with a limp in his right leg. The condition seems to have worsened over the years. At times, when the pain becomes unbearable and throbs at its worst, Ullo mutters, “Why did you curse me with this?” A year ago, Ullo began training to fight left-handed because the pain in his right leg had become so severe that fighting with his right hand was nearly impossible. The training paid off, and Ullo became a skilled swordsman. But the process left its marks — his worn and scarred armor bears witness to the many blows he has endured.
